THE GOODNESS OF GOD: HECKER REFLECTION- 1854
We can take great comfort as we reflect on a previously unpublished reflections from the 1854 spiritual notebook of Paulist founder, Servant of God, Father Isaac T. Hecker:
THE MORE HELPLESS MATTERS ARE, SO MUCH THE MORE SHOULD WE TRUST IN GOD. WHY? BECAUSE GOD HAS CREATED US. GOD HAS CREATED US OUT OF NOTHING, MOVED BY HIS GOODNESS ALONE. FOR THE NATURE OF GOODNESS IS TO EXPAND, TO EXPRESS ITSELF, IT SURROUNDS US TO MAKE US HAPPY. EVERY WORKMAN LOVES THE WORK OF HIS OWN HANDS.
OUR CONFIDENCE SHOULD INCREASE WITH THE RAGE OF THE STORM AND OUR JOY SHOULD BE GREATEST WHEN DANGER IS PRESENT BECAUSE GOD IS OUR GOD AND THE PROTECTOR OF THOSE WHO TRUST IN HIM. IT WILL BE SO WHEN OUR HOPE IS NOT IN OURSELVES BUT THE GOD MOST HIGH.
WHATEVER OUR DIFFICULTY, OUR TRIALS, PAINS OR PROBLEMS, WE SHOULD SPEAK OUT: "VICTORY! FOR WE ARE CHILDREN OF THE MOST HIGH.THE JUST SHALL LIVE FOREVER SAYS THE BOOK OF WISDOM."AND THE CARE OF THEM WITH THE MOST HIGH." THESE WORDS CAME FROM THOSE INSPIRED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.
THESE ARE WORDS FULL OF LIFE, HOPE AND ENCOURAGEMENT! THEY ARE AS APPLICABLE TODAY, A THOUSAND YEARS HENCE, AS WHEN THEY WERE FIRST SPOKEN. THE LORD GOD IS OUR LIGHT, OUR LIFE, OUR HOPE, OUR STRENGTH, OUR LOVE. IN DUE SEASON HE WILL GIVE US THE FULLNESS OF OUR DESIRES. THE LORD IS OUR PROTECTOR OF WHOM SHOULD WE FEAR.
Thank you for the privilege to share a reflection which has had a huge impact in my ministry as a chaplain at Legacy Meridian Hospital. I remember often the above words that God is in the "eye of the storm," in painful, difficult times! The above reflections give much strength as we remember the Lord Our God is our light, our hope and strength. The grim news of today must not shake us as we look to God for our strength!
Mission of the Atonement is such a beacon of hope and comfort to the people of God!
